Who We Serve in Callahan
Callahan grew up around the railroad. The Florida Railroad reached this part of western Nassau County in 1856, and the restored depot still sits in the middle of town. Today the area keeps its small-town, wide-open feel while more families discover what it offers. The 32011 ZIP code is home to about 15,400 people, and roughly one in three residents is 55 or older, according to the Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey.
Many Callahan households have built their careers somewhere else. Jacksonville International Airport is only about nine miles away, and a lot of residents have spent decades commuting to employers on the Northside and across Jacksonville. Others have worked closer to home for the Nassau County School District, county government, or local businesses, and some families have held land in the area for generations.
We work with pre-retirees and retirees, generally ages 50 to 75, who are financially established and want professional, ongoing oversight rather than handling every investment decision on their own. Common situations include:
- Rolling over a 401(k) or 403(b) when leaving a Jacksonville-area employer
- Bringing together retirement accounts from several past jobs
- Adjusting how much risk is in their investments as retirement gets closer
- Deciding how to invest money from the sale of land, a business, or a home
- Moving to Callahan from Jacksonville or across the state line from Georgia

Florida Retirement Tax Facts for Callahan Residents
Florida's tax rules are a big reason retirees choose Nassau County, and they matter for anyone deciding when and how to draw on their savings. Here's a general overview. It's education only, so please review your own situation with a qualified tax professional.
- No state income tax: Florida doesn't tax Social Security, pensions, or withdrawals from IRAs and 401(k)s.
- Homestead Exemption: Florida homeowners can exempt up to about $50,000 of assessed value on their primary home. For 2026, the maximum is $51,411.
- Save Our Homes: Once your home is homesteaded, increases in its assessed value are capped at 3% a year or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower.
- Millage: Most of the Callahan area is unincorporated Nassau County. For fiscal year 2025–26, the county adopted a countywide rate of 6.7457 mills plus a 2.2087-mill rate for unincorporated areas, with school district and other levies added on top. Properties inside town limits are also subject to the Town of Callahan's own rate.
- No estate or inheritance tax: Florida has neither.
- On the ballot: Florida voters will decide Amendment 3 on November 3, 2026. If it passes, it would raise the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes beginning in 2027.
Planning Tip
The "Rule of 55"
If you leave your job in or after the year you turn 55, federal rules generally let you take withdrawals from that employer's 401(k) without the 10% early-withdrawal penalty. Regular income tax still applies. The exception covers only the plan at the employer you just left, and money rolled into an IRA usually loses it until age 59½. For Callahan residents retiring early from a Jacksonville-area job, that detail can affect the timing of a rollover.
Even without a state income tax, the order and timing of withdrawals still shape your federal tax bill. We keep that in view when we make investment recommendations, and we're glad to coordinate with your tax professional. SBC Wealth Management doesn't provide tax or legal advice.

Callahan, FL Wealth Management FAQs
How far is SBC Wealth Management's office from Callahan?
Our main office is at 57 Homegrown Way, Unit 301, in Yulee, about 20 miles east of Callahan on SR 200/A1A. Most people make the drive in about 25 minutes. We also meet by appointment at our Jacksonville office near St. Johns Town Center, and phone meetings are always an option if a drive doesn't fit your schedule.
Does Florida tax retirement income for Callahan residents?
No. Florida has no state income tax, so Social Security, pensions, and withdrawals from IRAs and 401(k)s aren't taxed by the state. Federal income tax still applies to most retirement account withdrawals, which is why timing matters. This is general education, so please confirm the details for your situation with a tax professional.
I commute to Jacksonville. Can you help with my 401(k) when I retire?
Yes. Many Callahan residents have spent their careers with Jacksonville employers and leave with a 401(k) or 403(b) to decide about. Your options may include leaving the money in the plan, rolling it into an IRA, or a combination. We'll walk through the costs and features of each with you, so the choice is an informed one.
A lot of our wealth is in family land. If we sell some acreage, can you help us invest the proceeds?
Yes. Selling land is often a once-in-a-lifetime event, and deciding what to do with the money deserves care. We'll talk through your goals, timeline, and comfort with risk, then recommend how the proceeds might be invested alongside your other accounts. For the tax and legal side of a sale, we'll coordinate with your CPA and attorney.
We moved to Callahan from Georgia. What changes for our retirement accounts?
Your IRAs, 401(k)s, and brokerage accounts move with you, since they aren't tied to the state you live in. What changes is state tax: once you're a Florida resident, Florida doesn't tax your retirement withdrawals. A move is also a good time to review how your accounts are invested and whether consolidating some of them would make life simpler.
Do you work with clients outside Callahan?
Yes. We serve Northeast Florida and Coastal Georgia, including Hilliard, Bryceville, Yulee, Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Jacksonville, Orange Park, St. Simons Island, and Brunswick. Besides our Yulee office, we meet by appointment in Jacksonville, Orange Park, and on St. Simons Island, and we meet with clients by phone.
What does it mean that SBC Wealth Management is a fiduciary?
As a fiduciary, SBC Wealth Management, through Gibbs Wealth Management, is required to act in your best interest and not put its own interests ahead of yours when giving you investment advice. Gibbs's Form CRS also describes the conflicts of interest that come with how the firm is paid, and we encourage you to ask us about them.
How is SBC Wealth Management paid?
SBC Wealth Management is fee-based. You pay an asset-based advisory fee, and there are no commissions on advisory accounts. Before you begin, every potential cost, including adviser, management, and custodial fees, is disclosed up front, so you know what you'll pay. You'll also receive Gibbs Wealth Management's Form CRS, which explains fees and costs in plain language.
What happens at a complimentary retirement review?
It's a relaxed, no-pressure conversation, in person or by phone. We'll talk about your goals, when you hope to retire or how retirement is going, your comfort with risk, and the accounts you have today. You'll come away with a clearer picture of where you stand, with no obligation to move forward.
How is SBC Wealth Management related to Summerlin Benefits Consulting?
They're separate businesses. Advisory services are offered through SBC Wealth Management, which operates through Gibbs Wealth Management (“GWM”), an SEC‑registered investment adviser. Insurance products and services are offered through Summerlin Benefits Consulting Inc., which is independent of GWM. This page describes only SBC Wealth Management's advisory services.
