Wealth Management for Jacksonville, Florida Retirees and Pre-Retirees
Is Your Retirement Money Still Set Up for the Life You Want Next?
Retirement is getting closer, and one question keeps coming back: are your 401(k), your TSP, or that old IRA from a previous job still invested in a way that fits the life you want next? SBC Wealth Management helps Jacksonville pre-retirees and retirees answer that question with fiduciary, fee-based wealth management and investment advisory services. Stacy Summerlin, our Founder & Lead Advisor, brings more than 29 years of industry experience and is licensed in Florida and Georgia. Meet with her by appointment at St. Johns Town Center or at our main office in Yulee, or call 855-809-2894.
Who We Serve in Jacksonville
Jacksonville covers more ground than any other city in the continental United States, and Duval County is home to roughly 1.06 million people, according to the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate. About 17% of county residents are 65 or older, and many more are in their 50s and early 60s, starting to think seriously about what retirement will look like.
We work with pre-retirees and retirees, generally ages 50 to 75, who are financially established and would rather have a professional keep an eye on things than manage every decision alone. Many have spent long careers at the region's anchor employers: Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport, Baptist Health, Mayo Clinic, UF Health Jacksonville, Florida Blue, CSX, Duval County Public Schools, and the City of Jacksonville.
They live everywhere from Mandarin and San Marco to Deerwood, Riverside, Arlington, and the Beaches.
The situations that bring Jacksonville residents to us tend to sound familiar:
- Deciding what to do with a 401(k), 403(b), or Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) at retirement
- Pulling together accounts scattered across several past employers
- Making sure investments still match their comfort with risk as retirement nears
- Weighing pension choices and how they fit with the rest of their investments
- Relocating to Northeast Florida and wanting a local advisor they can sit down with

Why Do Jacksonville Residents Work With SBC Wealth Management?

We're fee-based, with no commissions on advisory accounts, and we disclose every potential cost up front, so you know what you'll pay before you begin. Florida Retirement Tax Facts for Jacksonville Residents
Florida's tax rules are a big part of why so many people choose to retire in Jacksonville. Here's a general overview; it's educational information, not tax advice, so please talk with your tax professional about your own situation.
- No state income tax. Florida doesn't tax Social Security benefits, pensions, or withdrawals from IRAs and 401(k)s. Federal income tax still applies.
- Homestead Exemption. Florida homeowners who make their home their permanent residence can exempt up to $50,000 of assessed value, with the second $25,000 now adjusted for inflation each year.
- Save Our Homes. Once your home is homesteaded, annual increases in its assessed value are capped at 3% or the change in the Consumer Price Index, whichever is lower.
- Duval County property taxes. For the 2025 tax year, the total millage for most Jacksonville homeowners (the city's General Services District, outside the Beaches and Baldwin) was 17.7412 mills. The City Council held the city's 11.1919-mill portion steady for 2026.
- No estate or inheritance tax. Florida doesn't impose either one at the state level.
On November 3, 2026, Florida voters will consider Amendment 3, a proposed constitutional amendment that would increase the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes starting in 2027.
Even without a state income tax, federal taxes still shape how and when you draw from your accounts. That's why it helps to think through investment decisions with the bigger picture in mind and to coordinate with your tax professional along the way.
Planning Tip
for Jacksonville Military Families
Jacksonville is one of the Navy's largest hubs in the Southeast, and many service members choose to stay after they retire. Because Florida has no state personal income tax, military retired pay and withdrawals from the Thrift Savings Plan aren't taxed by the state. Federal income tax still applies, so how you take withdrawals from your TSP or an IRA still matters for your overall tax picture.
How SBC Wealth Management Helps Jacksonville Investors
Every relationship starts with understanding you: your goals, your timeline, and how much risk you're comfortable taking. From there, our wealth management services are built around three areas.
Wealth management. Personalized guidance built around your goals, your timeline, and your comfort with risk, so the decisions you make about your money fit together instead of being made one account at a time.
Ongoing investment oversight. We select professionally managed model portfolios aligned with your objectives. Those portfolios are designed, maintained, and traded by independent third-party managers. We monitor your account on an ongoing basis and recommend changes as your life, your goals, or the markets change.
Retirement planning support. We help you see how your savings, investments, income needs, and long-term goals fit together as you approach retirement and as you move through it, whether you're a few years from leaving Mayo Clinic or already enjoying retirement in Mandarin.
Transparency is part of the process from day one. Clients receive Gibbs Wealth Management's Form CRS and Form ADV, which explain our services, fees, and potential conflicts of interest in plain language.

Retirement Investing Questions from Jacksonville, FL Residents
Where can I meet with SBC Wealth Management in Jacksonville?
You can meet with Stacy by appointment at our Jacksonville office at Regus at St. Johns Town Center, 10752 Deerwood Park Blvd., Suite 100. The office isn't staffed full-time, so please call 855-809-2894 to schedule. Our main office is at 57 Homegrown Way, Unit 301, in Yulee, about 40 minutes north via I-295 and I-95. Phone meetings are also available.
I'm retiring from NAS Jacksonville or Naval Station Mayport. What should I think about with my TSP?
Leaving the service doesn't require you to move your Thrift Savings Plan, so the first step is understanding your options: keeping it where it is, rolling it to an IRA, or a combination. Each choice affects investment flexibility, costs, and how you'll draw income later. We'll look at how your TSP fits with your military retired pay, savings, and goals before recommending anything.
Can you help me with a retirement plan from a Jacksonville hospital system?
Yes. Many people who work at Baptist Health, Mayo Clinic, UF Health Jacksonville, and other local health systems save through workplace plans such as 403(b)s and 401(k)s. Retirement or a job change is a natural time to review them. We'll go over your plan's options, discuss whether a rollover makes sense for you, and explain every potential cost before you decide.
I work for CSX or another Jacksonville-based company. How should I think about my 401(k) as retirement nears?
The years before retirement are a good time to check whether your 401(k) still matches your timeline and how much risk you're comfortable taking. Some employees also hold a large amount of their employer's stock, which concentrates risk in one company. We'll review your whole picture, including accounts from earlier jobs, and recommend changes when they fit your goals.
Does Florida tax my retirement income if I live in Jacksonville?
No. Florida has no state personal income tax, so Social Security, pensions, military retired pay, and withdrawals from IRAs and 401(k)s aren't taxed by the state. Federal income tax still applies. SBC Wealth Management doesn't provide tax advice, so we encourage you to coordinate with your tax professional as you make investment decisions.
When should I start working with an advisor before I retire?
Many people find that five to ten years before retirement is a helpful time to start, because there's room to adjust investments gradually rather than all at once. It's never too late, though. Whether you're a few years out or already retired, a review can show how your savings, investments, and income needs fit together.
What does it mean that SBC Wealth Management is a fiduciary?
As a fiduciary, SBC Wealth Management is required to act in your best interest and not put its own interests ahead of yours. In practice, that means recommendations are based on your goals, timeline, and comfort with risk, and potential conflicts of interest are disclosed to you in writing, including in Gibbs Wealth Management's Form CRS and Form ADV.
How is SBC Wealth Management paid?
SBC Wealth Management is fee-based. Clients pay an asset-based advisory fee, and there are no commissions on advisory accounts. Every potential cost, including adviser, management, and custodial fees, is disclosed up front so you know what you'll pay before you begin. You'll also receive Gibbs Wealth Management's Form CRS, which explains fees and costs in plain language.
What happens at a complimentary retirement review?
It's a relaxed, no-pressure conversation, in person or by phone, about your goals, your timeline, how much risk you're comfortable taking, and the accounts you have today. You'll leave with a clearer picture of where things stand. There's no obligation to become a client, and if we do work together, every potential cost is disclosed up front.
How is SBC Wealth Management related to Summerlin Benefits Consulting?
They're separate businesses. Advisory services are offered through SBC Wealth Management, which operates through Gibbs Wealth Management (“GWM”), an SEC‑registered investment adviser. Insurance products and services are offered through Summerlin Benefits Consulting Inc., which is independent of GWM. This page describes only SBC Wealth Management's advisory services.
